I have been struggling with a couple of things. One is what to do with this blog. There are few things worse than a stale blog, and this blog certainly is stale. As I have noted before, I started this blog to address communications to students when I was teaching multiple courses at MCTC. Now, I am only teaching one course per semester, so I no longer have that same need. So, I could just kill this blog. And I still might.
The other thing I was struggling with was what to do with this article: Research: It Starts with a Feeling | Inside Higher Ed. I think this is an important article for students to read. I have struggled this semester to get my students to move beyond "I think.." and "I feel..." statements to backing them up with some evidence. To move from opinion to opinion, but backed up with the thoughts, the scholarship, of others. To move beyond the superficial, the anecdote, to see that as an example, as a metaphor, for a broader concept and to engage with that material in a way that is introspective and meaningful and building a scholarly discourse. So, I decided to link to that article here and blog about it.
Now I hope I remember that it's here.

Open Access Presentation
Nancy Sims to speak about open access publishing model
The University of St. Thomas libraries are pleased to host an event
with Nancy Sims, who will speak about the issues and challenges of the
open access publishing movement, which has the potential of increasing
the visibility, access to and sharing of faculty
scholarly research.
Nancy is the Copyright Program Librarian at the University of
Minnesota libraries with a JD from the University of Michigan Law
School, and an MLIS from Rutgers University. She says that her job is
not to be the “copyright police” on her campus, but
to help individuals and groups throughout the University community to
understand issues surrounding copyright and scholarly communication.
Nancy says that she is fascinated by copyright law in all of its
aspects, and in particular, how individuals construct
understandings of copyright as it relates to their own scholarly,
artistic, professional, personal, cultural, and communicative
activities.
She has published articles and presented at conferences about copyright issues, technology, and emerging forms of scholarship.
Nancy Sims’ presentation and question and answer period will be in McNeely Hall 100 from 3:00 – 4:30 on Thursday, December 13th This event is free and open to the public and refreshments
will be served.
You will find a map to McNeely Hall here.
If you have any questions please let me know.

What do I do with this blog?
Okay, this blog has been pretty much idle since I stopped teaching multiple classes in a single semester at MCTC. I created this blog so I could share the same information with students across several online classes, and now I don't need to do that anymore. So, now I'm grappling with what to do with this blog space. Do I keep it and work on writing pithy commentary on some professional topic on some kind of regular basis? Do I note it as closed until further notice? Do I morph it into more of a personal/professional reflection blog?
For now, I am undecided. I will leave this here for now. For those of you who stumble upon this blog space, that's why it looks relatively untended. Because it is. For now.

Hard Choices: Do Libraries Really Destroy Books? : Monkey See : NPR
What do you think about weeding? Does it cause you physical pain to think of tossing out a book? Does it feel cathartic to get the old stuff outta there?
