Okay, this blog has been pretty much idle since I stopped teaching multiple classes in a single semester at MCTC. I created this blog so I could share the same information with students across several online classes, and now I don't need to do that anymore. So, now I'm grappling with what to do with this blog space. Do I keep it and work on writing pithy commentary on some professional topic on some kind of regular basis? Do I note it as closed until further notice? Do I morph it into more of a personal/professional reflection blog?
For now, I am undecided. I will leave this here for now. For those of you who stumble upon this blog space, that's why it looks relatively untended. Because it is. For now.

PHDI Fall Portfolio Show
The PHDI Fall Portfolio Show entitled [12] Elements featuring the fine work of 12 PHDI graduating students.
The show runs from 11/29 - 12/3 at the Vine Arts Center in the Ivy Building for the Arts 2637 27th Avenue South.
Things kick off this evening with an Industry Preview Night from 6:00 - 9:00
Regular Gallery Hours from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm Wed 11/30, Thursday 12/1, Friday 12/2 and Saturday 12/3 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
We have another Reception planned for Thursday 12/1 from 6:00 - 9:00.

Public Health and Students
The MCTC Student Senate is investing resources and energy into providing greater access to health care for students. This is a growing issue in higher education, and students are having a greater role.
How much do you know about what is going on around health care issues on our campus? Is access to health care something you're concerned about?

Textbook Buy-Backs!
MCTC Bookstore will be buying back textbooks for FALL 09 classes on May 8, and 11-14 (9AM-4PM) .
One suggestion, though, before the desire to recoup some cash for your texts overtakes all good sense. If you have a writing guide/style manual that covers MLA and/or APA citation style from ENGL 1111 or some other course, DO NOT sell it back! Keep it! You will not regret having it, especially if your plans include going on to further schooling, here at MCTC or at another institution. Even if your plans don't include formal schooling, a writing guide/style manual is helpful if you ever have to write formal letters (like to a landlord, or a letter to the editor, or a cover letter for a job application...). My $.02.

- Application DEADLINE ‐ Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. in the College Advancement Office (K 1100).
- Students must complete an entire scholarship packet for EACH scholarship for which they are applying. Copies of the application, recommendation letters and essay are acceptable.
- Students ineligible for federal financial aid must complete the 2008 income worksheet. The form is available in the College Advancement Office.
- Due to the requirements of F1‐Visas, International Students are not eligible for need‐based MCTC Foundation scholarships.

Scholarship Opportunity
The All-USA CC Academic Team seeks to honor nearly 400 students as representatives of all outstanding community college students around the world. Nearly $500,000 in stipends will be provided to students in 2010.
Two of MCTC's brightest stars could be the recipients of a $2,500 Gold Scholar stipend, a $1500 Silver Scholar stipend, a $1000 Bronze Scholar stipend, and many other scholarship opportunities.
We are looking for students who fulfill the following requirements:
--have at least a 3.5 GPA
--have completed at least 36 semester credits (by 12/31/09)
--are on track to complete 48 semester credits (by 8/30/10)
--have strong leadership abilities & experience
--demonstrate campus & community involvement

MCTC Culinary Arts Program students make and serve in the Cafe. Generally speaking, the food is delicious, fresh, and dare I say better than what the food service provides. Items are generally between $5-10, which is a pretty good deal for what you get. Bon Appetit!

Parking on Campus
Those of you who come to campus may have noticed some of this...
From the Director of Public Safety~~~
During the first few weeks of the spring semester the parking ramp has experienced more on-campus parking demand than we were able to supply. On Monday's and Wednesday's we are encountering peak demands between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. During this period of time we have been intermittently closing the parking ramp for 10 - 15 minutes. Opportunities to help alleviate parking congestion:
1) The Bookstore worked with MetroTransit to offer students a semester transportation pass for $84.00. The Bookstore has sold 2,520 semester bus passes as of 1/21/09.
2) We will be receiving free bike racks this spring that will accommodate 50 bikes through a grant the City of Minneapolis received.
3) Central Scheduling is working on event scheduling and considering parking demand issues.
4) Employees on payroll deduction have the opportunity to obtain a guaranteed parking space at the Laurel Village Parking Ramp located across the street from our parking ramp. Please contact me (ext.6902) if you are interested in pursuing this option.
5) We will be focusing on parking permit enforcement and removing those who have no association with the college.

So, if you can carpool, take an alternate form of transportation, or arrive before or after the busy times, you can minimize the problems you may encounter with campus parking, and potentially save some money and a bit of the environment.

very much in the planning stages, and student input is being sought as to
what might be desired. Some great ideas are being flown including a Health
Care center, a medition/yoga room, a fitness center, and even a new
auditorium/performance space.

Anyone interested in art, and art @ MCTC...
Four MCTC art students have work on display at the Hopkins Center for the Arts (1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins). The work is on display as a part of the 3rd Biennial Twin City Undergraduate Showcase and will be up until February 22. Twelve Twin Cities undergraduate schools are participating in the invitational and each has four student pieces on display. The four Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) students representing MCTC are - Alfonso Fernandez (photo), Megan Longo (sculpture), Mecca Johnson (watercolor), and Kelly Rohloff (print). Hours are at hopkinsartscenter.com.
