What is Social Cataloging?

This is great info from Tim Spalding of LibraryThing. I think we can learn a lot in from what's going on there and apply that to our work in libraries.

ASI's First Golden Turkey Award

ASI Announces Golden Turkey Award
Sarah Palin's Book Receives ASI's First Golden Turkey Honors

Wheat Ridge, CO (November 20, 2009)—The American Society for Indexing (ASI) wishes to present its Golden Turkey Award for misadventures in indexing to Sarah Palin and HarperCollins for Going Rogue. In these days of Google and full-text search, many people don’t realize how crucial the art and science of indexing still is. (See comments at http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-11-12/the-missing-pages-in-palins-book/ for some particularly disturbing evidence of public failure to recognize the value of good finding aids.) Palin’s book performs a crucial public service. The inaccessibility of information in this text makes it clear to any reader that a good index is essential to a book’s long-term value. <read complete press release>

Indexing Humor

From Slate.com

The Going Rogue Index
Sarah Palin didn't put an index in her book. So we made one for her.

By Christopher Beam

When Sarah Palin's 413-page autobiography, Going Rogue: An American Life, hit stands Tuesday, readers discovered the governor's most mavericky move yet: The book lacks an index. So Slate has compiled its own. Just print out this index, paste it into the back of your copy, and start skipping around! (And, yes, the page numbers are real.)

Crazy Monday

I came in to the office with two meetings on my calendar, both of which should have taken a combined 3 hours. They ended up taking 4.5 hours, and I had two add-on meetings which took about another 1.5 hours. So, there went 6 hours of my day.

After performing a triage on my email, I will be looking at Online Office in my courses. If you've posted a question to me there or in the other question forums/topics in D2L, I will respond to you by the end of the day.

After that message triage, I am working on grading materials as quickly as I can. Here's my to-do list, in order:
  1. Grade Quiz 1 for INFS 2210
  2. Grade Assignment 6 for INFS 1000
  3. Grade Imaginative Works, Images and Sounds assignment for INFS 2210
  4. Grade INFS 1000 complete midterms
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Millennials in the Library Teleconference

MCTC LIT Program

Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Room S3420
1501 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55403 US

When: Friday, November 13, 10:45AM to 1:00PM
Phone: 612-659-6290 to RSVP; ask for Ginny Heinrich

The Millennial Generation, Generation Y, Echo Boomers, Digital Natives, and the Trophy Generation are all terms used to describe people born in the United States between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. They have been shaped by a heady mix of culture, politics, and technology. "Millennials" have had an unprecedented exposure to mass media, pop culture, instant communication, and cultural freedom woven together by a complex technological net. It is daunting to try to classify a group of over 70 million people easily. Our teleconference will seek to add nuance to these classifications to help us understand them more fully and answer the questions: Who are Millennials? How can our libraries better serve them as patrons, students, and staff?

Speaker

Jennifer Kushell
At 35, Jennifer Kushell has lead a movement inspiring young people to pursue their professional dreams for more than a decade. As the president and co-founder of YSN.com ("Your Success Network"), she spearheaded development of the first professionally focused network dedicated to supporting emerging adults (Gen X and Millennials) as they transition from home and school into the real world. In working with young people from over 100 countries, YSN's mission is to ensure that no young person lacks access to opportunity to realize their full potential. YSN enables the next generation workforce in exploring their passions, building their professional identities, and pursuing opportunities across the globe.

Fee
  • No charge; registration is required.
Agenda
10:45 - 11 am - Check-in, Welcome

Newspapers as Information Sources

Local newspapers are declining in numbers, but this issue is about more than just the newsprint format itself; it's about jobs, investigative reporting, and actual fact-checking before distribution. I think that's kind of a big deal. What do you think?

The Future of Reading

I read an interesting piece in Library Journal today (citation below), sent to me thanks to my subscription to "Library Link of the Day." It is about the future of reading (hence the post title), and in turn, libraries. It raises several issues which I think are interesting, but more importantly perhaps it also includes a "Reader Bill of Rights for the Digital Era" for this brave new world of electronic books, etc. In it, it raises several issues for individuals as well as libraries to consider. What do you think? Add your comments here, or post in our course Hallway Conversations discussion forum.

AACK!

I am WAY behind in grading your work. Lest you think I've been sitting around eating bon bons, you should know that the past two days I've been out of the office at all-day mini-conferences, talking about library cataloging, authority control, discovery tools, electronic resources management, and other things that have made my eyes glaze over. I've been logging into D2L during breaks to look for messages from you and respond to emails.

My agenda for tomorrow: get up, get my kids off to school, get to work, GRADE PAPERS until 3, and then I have a 3 hour Academic Council meeting. Academic Council is the committee made up of faculty and administrators that reviews and approves or rejects all new proposed courses and awards. After Academic Council, I have to go to a parent information meeting for a program one of my sons wants to participate in (Environmental Camp; anyone have kids go to that?). After I get home from that meeting, I will eat something then probably collapse in a heap. Do you care? Probably not, but I wanted you to have some idea of what your instructors are up to when they're not getting back to you as fast as you'd like (and as fast as we'd like, sometimes).

Trial Databases

MCTC Library is running trials of several databases. They are listed and described at the top of the complete database list on the library home page, and some are also listed under appropriate subject categories.

Our current trials:

· Academic Search Complete which includes all content from Academic Search Premier plus additional sources, many of which are international. We question the value of this database considering the annual cost, so your feedback is greatly desired.

· Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology

· Blackwell’s International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest

· Ebrary Academic Complete which offers fulltext of over 40,000 ebooks. We are testing this ebook software; if we decide to use this software, our collection of ebrary books will be MUCH smaller than this collection, so use it as much as you can before the end of the trial.

· PsychARTICLES offers access to fulltext of many major journals in psychology

· Newsbank Access World News

Coming soon:

· American Indian Experience database

· Myilibrary ebook platform

Please take a look and let us know what you think. Send us your opinions and experiences as they occur using the Ask a Librarian form, and we will include them in our final decisionmaking. What do you think about content, ease of use, help information, bells and whistles?

Twin Cities 5K

I finished 55th out of 98 in my division (females 40-44), with a final time of 38:54. It was a lot of fun. This morning, we went out to Mile 8 to cheer on the marathon runners. Anyone run in any of the weekend races?

Instructor update

Is your instructor ever going to grade stuff and get caught up? Gosh, I hope so... But right now, I just spent about 2 hours going over a decision about what to do for our library consortium and what to do about form versus topic authority subdivisions while updating our catalog records, and honestly, my brain hurts. I won't get back to grading materials and reviewing posts and questions until sometime tomorrow afternoon, because...

Okay, I'm not running in the marathon on Sunday, but I am running in the 5K tomorrow, unless it is pouring down rain, in which case I'm running to a coffee shop. Running in warm summer rain = ok; running in cold fall rain, uh, not so much. I plan to work most of tomorrow afternoon, so will be online in your class materials and questions then.

Thanks for your patience.

Instructor update

I was the Saturday librarian today, and was swamped with questions and other stuff. Tomorrow, I have some time in the morning, so will be online then, but will be offline for part of the afternoon and evening due to Yom Kippur. I will be offline through Monday as well. I'll be back in the office on Tuesday. So, if you don't hear from me for a little while, that's what I'm up to.

Look to the Skies...

From faculty member Parke Kunkle:

Hi all you early risers
If you were up and sky gazing this morning about 5am, the sky was gorgeous. Orion and his entourage bedazzle the morning skies. But this morning, Venus shone brightly with the crescent Moon above it.

Keep watching over the next two mornings. By Wednesday at about 6am look east for a very thin crescent Moon right next to Venus. Beautiful.

Clear skies all.

Wikipedia and Gender

In INFS 1000, we've been spending a fair amount of time talking about Wikipedia. I always think it's interesting that, more than just about any other web site out there, Wikipedia generates the most conversation in this course in particular, but in just about all of the courses I teach. Maybe it is because some faculty are so anti-Wikipedia, just 'cause it's Wikipedia. What frustrates me is that they don't take it to the next level and say that ANY general encyclopedia is, most of the time, simply not suitable as a source for college-level research, and to talk about how it CAN be used.

Anyway, one of my esteemed Library colleagues forwarded a link to a blog post on the Wall Street Journal, noting that only 13% of Wikipedia contributors are women. How do you think this influences the entries in Wikipedia? Do you think it matters?

MLA-Style Citation (sorry, can't do the hanging indent):

Changes to Wikipedia

I know from the Information Seeking Behavior survey results thus far that many of you use Wikipedia for personal, professional, and academic information. You may be interested to know that, according to an August 24, 2009 New York Times article, that:
Officials at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit in San Francisco that governs Wikipedia, say that within weeks, the English-language Wikipedia will begin imposing a layer of editorial review on articles about living people.
Given Wikipedia's open editing process (anyone can edit an entry), what do you think about these changes? Do you think this will make for better entries and increased reliability? Have you ever edited or created an entry in Wikipedia? Add your comments here, or post in D2L, in the Hallway Conversations discussion topic.

Public Health and Students

The MCTC Student Senate is investing resources and energy into providing greater access to health care for students. This is a growing issue in higher education, and students are having a greater role.

How much do you know about what is going on around health care issues on our campus? Is access to health care something you're concerned about?

You may want to check out this recent article in Peer Review, a journal for faculty and administrators in higher education:

Search Tools You Can Really Put to Use!

I'm a big fan of the Great Minnesota Get-Together, otherwise known as the Minnesota State Fair (or, "the state f-word," as my friend who lives about a block from the fairgrounds calls it when she's annoyed by people driving around her neighborhood looking for street and yard parking...). And, this year they have TWO great search tools you can use:
  1. Food Finder
  2. Merch Search
How awesome is that??? Note that for both, you can search for stands that have free stuff or other coupons and discounts. For a college student (or faculty or staff member) on a tight budget, that can help those discretionary fair dollars go a bit farther.

Any of you have plans to go to the State Fair (August 27-Labor Day, September 7)? What are your favorite things to eat/see/do there?

eBook Reader Wars Heat Up

From NPR:
Sony Corp. plans to offer an e-book reader with the ability to wirelessly download books, injecting more competition in a small but fast-growing market by adopting a key feature of the rival Kindle from Amazon.com. (Full article)

Libraries, including the MCTC Library, are increasingly providing access to electronic books; have you ever used an ebook through a library account? Do you think you ever would?
